Minijax 7 - Clockwise: Chuck Bettis, Derek Morton, Sars, , Scott Allison, Violet, Mystery Shopper

The seventh Minijax in the series began with a group called Mystery Shopper composed of Sebastian Krawczuk and Pilesar. The duo cranked out the jams with some sputtering Nord G2 patches, miscellaneous percussion and occasional vox. Next a few folks from Richmond's 804 Noise collective brought their laptops and a few beats.

Techclub Minijax 7 PosterThe last set, otherwise known as "Scarcelight and Friends", featured Chris Jeely aka Accelera Deck and a slew of DC recording artists that appear on his label. Derek Morton (from Mikroknytes) and Chuck Bettis (from Measles Mumps Rubella) known as Mormon Brown Wing Overdrive tweaked the electronics from all sides of the digital and electronic spectrum using a home-built fourses and an Apple-built laptop. Actually, Mr. Bettis likes to scream at machines, as seen in the picture.

Violet (aka Jeff Surak) and Sc.all (Scott Allison) segued from the Mormons with sludge, drone, and the sound of airplanes exploding in flames. Other fourses were used/abused amid a tangle of cords and cables until Accelera Deck broke in with his warm guitar granulated sonics. After a short solo performance the entire crew brought the set to a finale with a group improvisation. The show was recorded, and hopefully will be released in the future.

September 20th, 2004 at Black Cat, Washinton DC, 9pm $5.

September is Sonic Circuits month in our nation's capital. Techclub rises to the occasion by throwing the 6th edition of its popular electronic Open Minijax. One part open mic, one part brave electronic experimentation each night emenates an entirely different vibe. This time around Techclub organizer Derek Morton has coaxed new Baltimore transplant Peter B down to our "Chocolate City" to hear his conceptual serenades. Peter B in action at the Tank in NYC Peter B is not a circuit bender and it could be argued that he is not human as well. The instruments he crafts from scratch out of microprocessors, knobs, LEDs and miles of wire do not follow any traditional logic except a passion for coaxing beautiful alien life forms to emerge from the chaotic strangle of silicone.

Peter has built Din Datin Duderos, Ambraziers, Tranos, Shinths and is promising to bring the "Shinkoyo choirs" for his next Minijax performance.

Open Minijax v1.2 - Electronic minisets for experimental music and video performance. Laptop rockers, gameboy freaks, circuit benderz... fx loop gurus, low rez video pranksters, knob tweakers, digital sound processing head chefs, too much to list. The third "open mic" showcase of its kind that allows electronic experimental music and video artists to show off their work in 15 minute minisets. These shows are open to laptop rockers, filmmaker geeks, gameboy freaks, circuit benderz, fx loop gurus, low rez video pranksters, knob tweakers, and digital sound processing head chefs. The only restriction is that the set-up can be staged quickly. The spirit of the event pays hommage to the little audio connector known as "1/8 stereo mini jack" hence the name "Open Minijax."

Open Minijax was well attended (for DC standards) by more than 60 people. John Rickman handled the DJ duties between the 2 set breaks..thank you! The majority of the folks did the laptop thing while David Litz and Violet brought out effect boxes to tweak. Two LSDJ gameboyers D. Thumbski and Ben White represented the "handheld" division by rocking LSDJ on their gameboys.
